All over instagram the drink of the moment seems to be a matcha latte. I am a sucker for any type of superfood and after learning that just one cup of matcha tea is the equivalent of 10 cups of green tea I was certainly up for trying some.
The benefits of matcha are incredible. It contains a unique, potent class of antioxidant known as catechin’s, These are not found in other foods. In particular, the catechin EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) provides potent cancer-fighting properties. But if that isn’t enough to make you give it a try there are so many other benefits! It boosts your metabolism and also burns calories, music to my ears. Not to mention also being a natural detoxifier whilst calming the mind and relaxing the body. Being a mother of 3 small children I could certainly use a dose of calm. Matcha is naturally rich in fibre, chlorophyll, vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium. It also lowers cholesterol and blood sugar.
With so many benefits and my health and wellbeing being one of my main resolutions for 2018 I decided i would give this a whirl.
I tried this Vivid Matcha Green Tea and made it up as per the packet instructions. Although not completely unpleasant it was super strong. Imagine a cup of green tea with about 5 tea bags in it! Powerful! If i was going to drink this on a regular basis i needed it to be a bit more drinkable so i decided to make a matcha latte. I used unsweetened almond milk to make mine but you can use any milk you like.
To make the latte all you will need is a sachet of matcha tea or 1g if you have loose powder, 3 tablespoons of boiled water and some almond milk. A really easy way to measure how much milk you will need is to take the mug you will be drinking from and fill it to your normal drinking level. Then tip this milk into a small pan and gently warm.
Whilst the milk is warming boil some water and tip your matcha sachet into your mug or cup. Then you will need to add 3 tablespoons of the boiled water and mix until it forms a smooth paste. You can buy a special whisk for matcha tea but it isn’t necessary.
Once your milk is nice and warm you just tip this into your mug and gently stir till the matcha is all mixed in. Then enjoy!
This is such a delicious comforting drink. Even better that you know you’re getting so many benefits from drinking it too. A great way to start the day or relax in the evening.
I am certainly going to try and have one of these every day. Had anyone else tried a matcha latte or tea? Have you noticed any health benefits? I would love to hear about them!
